How to Write a Song if You’re a Beatmaker or Music Producer: A 5-Step Process

5 Steps to Write a Catchy Song: Tips for Music Producers and Beatmakers

Are you a music producer or beatmaker looking to write a hit song that will connect with your artist and their audience? Follow these five steps to create a memorable and catchy song that people will love.

Step 1: Start with Your Chord Progression

Begin by choosing a chord progression that matches the genre of music you're writing. Whether you're writing a pop song, a hip-hop track, or a ballad, you'll need a series of chords played in a specific order. Check out online resources or music theory books to find common chord progressions like

  • I - IV - V - I
  • I - vi - IV - V
  • ii - V - I
Once you have a chord progression, start playing it and see what comes to you. You may start humming a melody or coming up with lyrics.

Step 2: Add Your Melody

Your melody is the backbone of your song, and it should be catchy and memorable. You can start by humming or singing a tune that you come up with on the spot, or try playing around with different chords on your instrument until you find a progression that sounds good. Once you have a basic melody, you can start to flesh it out by adding more notes and embellishments. Just be careful not to make it too complex, or you'll end up with a melody that's too busy and difficult to follow.

Step 3: Create the Instrumental/Beat

The beat or instrumental is the underlying arrangement of a song. You can use a variety of instruments like guitars, pianos, drums, and synthesizers to create your song's atmosphere. You'll need a DAW, also known as a Digital Audio Workspace, to record your instruments, vocals, and build a song using the midi elements within your DAW. Use the following softwares to create your instrumental:

  • Logic Pro X
  • Ableton Live
  • Pro Tools
  • FL Studio
  • Cubase
  • And more...

Step 4: Structure Out Your Song

The overall layout of a song is called song structure, which includes the verses, choruses, and bridges. A well-structured song will flow well and be easy to follow for the listener. Experiment with different song structures like:

  • Verse - PreChorus - Chorus - Verse - PreChorus - Chorus - Bridge - Chorus (most common)
  • Intro - Verse - Chorus - Verse - Chorus - Bridge - Chorus - Outro
  • Verse - Chorus - Verse - Chorus - Outro (hip-hop/rap)
Just remember to keep it simple and catchy!

Step 5: Add the Lyrics

The lyrics of your song should tell a story or express an intended emotion. Write about what you know and feel connected to for a more relatable song that the listener can immediately feel connected to. Consider the rhythm of the song when writing your lyrics, so the lyrics should fit the rhythm of the song and flow well. Use different techniques, such as alliteration and assonance, to make your lyrics more interesting.

General Tips for Writing a Song

Keep your song simple and catchy. People are more likely to remember a song that is easy to sing along to. Write about something you know and feel passionate about, and get feedback from others to improve your song.

By following these tips, you can write a successful song that people will love. So have fun with the process and write from the heart!
